ICD-9-CM: Coding Essentials for Home Care Professionals February 16-18, 2010, Doubletree Hotel, Dallas, Texas
|
Beginner Level, Coding Fundamentals: Tuesday, February 16, 2010 Getting the basics right is the first step in coding accuracy. This course emphasizes the official coding guidelines, Chapter 3 of the OASIS Implementation Manual, Appendix D and other official guidance. The program will provide the “background” of why we have to do what we do. Common coding errors will be identified and rectified--overuse of V codes; sequencing issues; missing 5th digits are just a few. Updated to include any CMS changes regarding ICD-9-CM coding, this full-day workshop is designed for beginner coders who have a basic understanding of home health and OASIS. We will learn how to use the coding manual and learn to apply the conventions and the basics of sequencing. Common home care diagnoses with specific sequencing rules will be discussed and presented. Topics covered will include: • Basics of the OASIS diagnosis items and the instructions from CMS, including M0246 • The relationship between OASIS, PPS and diagnosis coding • Basic principles of using the coding manual • Sequencing basics such as manifestation codes • Prioritizing the plan of care and sequencing accordingly • Sequencing of common home care diagnoses, such as diabetes, CVAs and therapy cases Beginners will receive a basic understanding of home care coding and intermediate coders will receive a good overview of the basics. Participants MUST bring a current ICD-9-CM Coding Manual to class! (6.5 contact hours continuing education for nurses; 6.5 clock hours Administrator/Alternate; 6 CEUs toward fulfilling the HCS-D Certification maintenance requirement).
Intermediate Level, Competency in Diagnois Coding: Wednesday & Thursday, February 17-18, 2010 Coding your patients’ conditions accurately and sequencing them according to new guidance can mean confusion. Getting the right payment for the care of your patient and avoiding new medical review edits is the objective and that can be difficult. Overuse of V codes sabotage your outcomes and your payment and even Medicare has warned us about excessive use! This intermediate coding class is not for the faint of heart or those with malaise and fatigue. The chapters of the coding book will be covered with lots of home health scenarios to analyze and code. Learn when and how to use V codes and the consequences of getting too enthusiastic with them. The coding aspects of PPS Refinement will be thoroughly discussed and applied, as well as application of the OASIS C coding data items. Learn the secrets of sequencing and show your competence in coding. Participants MUST bring a current ICD-9-CM Coding Manual to class! Participants wanting continuing education credit must attend this full 1 ½ day session. (9.75 contact hours for nurses; 9.75 clock hours Administrators/Alternates; 10 CEUs toward fulfilling the HCS-D Certification requirement).
