Deciphering ICD-9-CM: Coding Competency for Home Care Professionals February 20-21, 2007 San Antonio, Texas
Part I: Beginner Level - Tuesday, February 20, 2007 This class is designed for beginner coders with a basic understanding of home health and OASIS. This class will provide the “background” of why we have to do what we do. We will learn how to use the coding manual and learn the basics of sequencing. Common home care diagnoses with specific sequencing rules will be discussed and presented.
- Basics of the OASIS diagnosis items and the instructions from CMS
- The relationship between OASIS, PPS and diagnosis coding;
- Basic principles of using the coding manual;
- Sequencing basics such as manifestation codes;
- Prioritizing the plan of care and sequencing accordingly;
- Sequencing of common home care diagnoses, such as diabetes, CVAs and therapy cases
Beginners will receive a basic understanding of home care coding and intermediate coders will receive a good overview of the basics. (Basic understanding of the above principles will be covered on the HCS-D exam.) Session provides 6 contact hours continuing education for nurses; 6 clock hours for Administrators/Alternates; 6 CEUs toward fulfilling the HCS-D Certification maintenance requirements.
Part II: Intermediate Level - Wednesday, February 21, 2007 Think you have the basics down pat? This seminar will start with a quick overview of the basics. Next comes the challenge of coding patient scenarios with more complex patients with more co-morbidities. Application of the basics is the name of the game. Find out how diagnoses affect your outcomes and discuss those diagnoses causing problems in medical review. This class also provides a good foundation for those taking the HCS-D exam. Session provides 10 contact hours continuing education for nurses; 10 CEUs toward fulfilling the HCS-D Certification maintenance requirements.
Optional: Study Session to Prepare to take the HCS-D Exam - Wednesday, February 21, 2007, 5:00-6:30 pm. To attend the optional study session you must RSVP on the registration form, no additional fee required.
